The problem
Faulty or Damaged Power Poles Can Be Dangerous
Private power poles support overhead power lines, directing electricity from the grid to your property. Over time, these poles can deteriorate due to weather exposure, corrosion, or structural weakness, leading to serious electrical hazards and power disruptions.
Common private power pole issues include:
- Leaning or Unstable Poles
Structural damage or shifting ground can cause poles to lean, increasing the risk of collapse. - Rotting or Termite-Damaged Wooden Poles
Timber poles deteriorate over time, becoming unsafe and non-compliant. - Corroded or Rusted Steel Poles
Rust weakens steel poles, reducing their structural integrity. - Electrical Faults or Arcing Wires
Faulty connections or frayed power lines can cause dangerous electrical faults. - Storm & Weather Damage
High winds, lightning, and floods can damage or bring down private poles. - Non-Compliance with Safety Standards
Old or unmaintained poles may fail inspection requirements, leading to service disconnection or fines.
Signs Your Private Power Pole Needs Attention:
- Visible Rust or Corrosion
Structural damage or shifting ground can cause poles to lean, increasing the risk of collapse. - Rotting or Termite-Damaged Wooden Poles
If you notice your private power pole is rotting, it is best to have it looked at right away. - Cracks or Holes Near the Base:
Cracks or holes may be a sign of internal decay or corrosion, reducing the pole’s structural strength and stability. - Unusual Sounds
If you notice buzzing, popping or crackling from the pile area, make sure to call a qualified electrician. - Flickering lights or intermittent power
This could be a sign of loose or damaged wiring. - You Receive a Defect Notice From Western Power:

A private power pole is the pole that carries electricity from the street’s main supply (managed by Western Power) onto your private property. Once the connection passes the network boundary, the pole and all wiring beyond it become the property owner’s responsibility.
Because they’re privately owned, you’re responsible for their maintenance, safety, and compliance with Western Australia’s electrical regulations. This includes regular electrical safety checks, timely repairs, and full replacement of damaged poles when they become unsafe or non-compliant. Neglecting maintenance can lead to power outages, fines, or serious electrical hazards.
