What’s Included in a Standard EV Charger Installation?
A basic home EV charger installation generally covers:
- Installation of a wall-mounted EV charger (up to 22kW)
- Up to 15 metres of cabling between the switchboard and the charger
- RCD protection and circuit breaker configuration
- Wall penetration and fixing materials
- Testing and commissioning of the unit
All work must be completed by a licensed electrician. At Voltaic Electrical, every install meets AS/NZS 3000 standards and includes full compliance testing.

Key Factors That Affect EV Charger Installation Cost
Not every home is the same, so it’s important to understand what can influence the final installation cost:
1. Charger Type and Brand
Prices vary between EV charger brands. For example:
- Wallbox Pulsar Plus: Compact and smart, typically mid-range
- Zappi: Solar-integrated, ideal for solar homes
- Tesla Wall Connector: Designed specifically for Tesla vehicles
2. Power Supply Type
Homes with three-phase power can install higher capacity chargers (up to 22kW), but may incur higher installation costs. Single-phase installations (up to 7kW) are generally more affordable.
3. Switchboard Compatibility
If your switchboard is outdated or overloaded, it may need an upgrade. Visit our switchboard upgrade page for more information and pricing.
4. Installation Complexity
Homes with longer distances between the switchboard and the garage, challenging cable runs, or hard-to-access meter boxes will typically face higher labour and material costs.
Typical Price Ranges (By Scenario)
- Standard 7kW charger on single-phase (no extras): $1,200–$1,600+
- Wallbox or Tesla charger, average install: $1,500–$2,200+
- Three-phase install with 15–20m cabling: $2,000–$2,800+
- Smart charger with solar load balancing: $2,500–$3,500+
Do I Need a Switchboard Upgrade?
If your switchboard lacks the capacity or protection requirements, it will need upgrading before a charger can be installed. Costs range from $800–$1,500+. We’ll assess your switchboard during the site inspection and provide an all-inclusive quote. Learn more about switchboard upgrades.
Other Optional Costs to Consider
- Long cable runs: Extra cable, conduit, and labour may increase cost
- Trenching or outdoor install: For external garages or driveways
- Solar integration: Useful for load balancing or smart solar charging (Zappi)
- Wi-Fi/network configuration: Optional but often required for smart charger setup
